Filing deadline nears with some spots still open

Spots remain open as Tuesday’s deadline to file for city council and school board positions approaches.

As of Friday afternoon, the most candidates had filed for positions on the Pomona City Council. Candidates have until noon Tuesday to file.

County Clerk Shari Perry said all cities except the City of Ottawa file in the county clerk’s office, 315 S. Main St., Ottawa, or with their city clerk. The City of Ottawa files with the city clerk at City Hall, 101 S. Hickory St. School board positions are filed in the county clerk’s office.

If a primary election is needed, it will be March 3, and the general election will be April 7. The number of positions available determines the number of candidates needed to file in order to hold a primary. The current filings don’t require a primary.

City council positions available and filings include:

• Pomona — Joann Hancock and Richard Adler have filed for the position of mayor. Adler holds the position. Lawrence Case, Joe Goracke and incumbents Don Lockaby and Marie Seneca have filed for the council. Two council positions are open.

• Ottawa — Commissioners Rocky Fleer and Linda Reed have filed for re-election. Jeff Richards also has filed. Three at-large positions are open.

• Lane — Council member Deanna Carroll has filed for re-election. Positions open include mayor and three council positions.

• Princeton ­— Mayor Donna Magee has filed for re-election. Council members Chris Hutchinson, Kathy Jones and Carol Lingo also have filed for re-election. Positions open include mayor and five council positions.

• Rantoul — Council members Blanka Bellinger, Pat Hutchinson and Ron Parks have filed for re-election. Mayor Don Covington has filed for a council position. Positions open include mayor and five council positions.

• Richmond — Mayor Mary Ann Platt has filed for re-election. Betty Bowlby has filed for a council position. Positions open include mayor and two council positions.

• Wellsville — Council member Marvin Hutchinson has filed for re-election. Positions open include three council positions.

• Williamsburg — No candidates have filed. Positions open include three council positions.

School board positions available and filings include:

• Central Heights — Ron Sluder has filed for re-election for Position 6. Shane Oram and Angela Weiderholt have filed for Position 5, held by Betty Raby. Jack Davis has filed for Position 4, held by Darren Hibdon.

• West Franklin — Stacy Hower has filed for Position 4, held by Sheila Anderson. Sherry Harris has filed for Positions 5, held by Janie Dillon, and Gene Hirt has filed for Position 6, held by Keith Milliken.

• Wellsville — Ron Bloss has filed for re-election for Position 4. Clyde Coons has filed for Position 5, held by Rob Pearce. Juanita Peckman has filed for re-election for Position 6.

• Ottawa — Jeanette Lowry and Marge Stevens have filed for re-election. The other at-large position, held by Mike Sipple, is open.
