Field named for longtime coach

Louis Coppoc was recognized by the city of Williamsburg at the historical society’s spring tea March 29 for his long history of serving the youth of the community.

He was presented with a sign with the words “Coach Louis Coppoc Field” on it. The sign will be displayed at the football field at 100 E. South St. , Williamsburg.

Coppoc became a resident of Williamsburg in 1957. He began teaching and coaching at Williamsburg High School after his graduation from Ottawa University that same year.

“It was my first and last job,” Coppoc said.

Sports that Coppoc coached were track, football, basketball and cross country. He served in both the capacity of head and assistant coach throughout his career.

His service to the youth of the community continued past his retirement in 1995. He continued to be an assistant cross-country coach for three more years and served on various committees, which benefited the educational and recreational needs of the youth.

He also has spent hours mowing the playing field since the City of Williamsburg acquired it in 2008.
