OU softball sweeps Sterling

The Ottawa University softball team Saturday swept Sterling, 3-1 and 7-5, at Alumni Park in Ottawa.

Pam Johnston won the opener with a six-hitter. Ottawa made good use of its five hits, scoring all three runs in the second inning. Jamie Miller, Kelly Higbie and Kerry Higbie had RBI hits.

The nightcap had more offense. Ottawa scored four runs in the first and led 5-3 after two innings. Both teams had 11 hits. Jaime Simms was the winning pitcher.

Lori Ewalt had two hits and two RBI. Sharee Joyner and Josie Hildebrand also had two hits each.

Ottawa improved to 28-15.

Bethany tops OU baseball twice

The Ottawa University and Bethany baseball teams played two different games Saturday, but the outcome was the same in Ottawa.

The opener was a pitcher’s duel with Bethany winning, 2-0. The nightcap saw Bethany’s offense come to life in an 11-3 win over the Braves. Ottawa had five hits in each contest. Brandon Myers and Joe Summers had two hits apiece in each game.

OHS netters win match in tourney

DE SOTO — The Ottawa High School tennis team won one match Saturday in the De Soto Invitational with a shuffled lineup because of prom.

In singles, Trent Corcoran lost 8-5 to both Immaculata and Lansing. Braden Ward fell 8-0 to Lansing and 8-5 to Immaculata.

In doubles, Kyle Reeve and Chris Nicholson fell 8-0 to Lansing and  8-3 to De Soto. Amy Barnes and Lincoln Coleman lost 8-3 to Baldwin and split with Immaculata, winning 8-2 and falling, 8-3.

OHS JV wins home tourney

The Ottawa High School junior varsity softball team swept to the OHS tournament title Friday at Forest Park.

Ottawa defeated Fort Scott, 9-2, and Lawrence Free State, 15-0 in three innings.

In the opener, Amanda Rose had two hits. Hallie Bones pitched both games to improve to 9-0 with a save. She had 15 strikeuts against Fort Scott and six against the Firebirds, where she faced the minimum nine hitters.

Ottawa plays today at home against Blue Valley West in a make-up doubleheader.
