Flooding causes minor problems

Flooding from this weekend’s storms caused a few problems for area motorists in Franklin County, but the flooding was minor and water levels appear to be receding, officials said.

Alan Radcliffe, Franklin County emergency management director, reported some minor flooding in Lane and shallow water over Colorado Road south of Pomona.

“There’s nothing major,” he said. “It looks like it’s going down.”

As of 8:30 a.m. today, the Marais des Cygnes was at 31.09 feet and falling from Monday afternoon.

Flood stage is 31 feet.

The Pottawatomie Creek at Lane was reportedly at 24 feet early this morning, which had surpassed its flood stage of 23 feet.

At least two people drove into high water and became stranded overnight, according to a report from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The incidents happened in the 3400 block of Eisenhower Terrace and the 800 block of Virginia Road. No injuries were reported.

Precipitation Sunday and early Monday morning totaled 2.6 inches, which easily surpassed a record of 1.28 inches set in 1999.

Ottawa’s monthly average for April is 3.55 inches, but recent rains have put the monthly total at 6.22 inches.
