OU women's soccer signs 7 players

The Ottawa University women’s soccer program has singed seven more players for the 2008 season to bring the total to 14. signings of seven athletes for the upcoming 2008 season.

The new signees are Samanatha Mayfield, Rebekah Smith, Morgan White, Kelsey Meyer, Kasey Craven, Jessica Wyckoff and Amanda Just.

Samantha Mayfield

 Mayfield, a 5-foot-6 forward, earned four letters in softball for the Midlothian High. She was a second team all-district selection this past season.

 “Samantha is just the thing we needed to add to our talented squad. Her size and ability on the ball will be a useful addition to our forward line,” Ottawa coach Craig Shaw said. “She was the best player at the Texas Lightning showcase and a host of schools wanted her signature. She will go from strength to strength during her four years here.”

Mayfield plans to major in biology.

Rebekah Smith

Smith, a 5-5 forward, was a three-year letterwinner for Broken Arrow High School. She helped lead her team to the 2005 Directors Cup championship, to the 2007 state championship, to the 18th Annual Ozarks Dr. Pepper Shootout championship, the 2004 Capital City Cup championship and helped her team to a runner-up finish at the 2004 Labor Day Invitational, Fall Classic and TSC Challenge Cup.

 She earned honorable mention all-district in 2004 and 2005, honorable mention all-conference in 2005 and 2006 and earned Rookie of the Year honors during the 2004-05 season for the Tigers

 “Her versatility will help her gain experience during the games as a freshman and will help us where ever a need arises,” Shaw said. “She is calm and confident on the ball and I am a fan of her composure and desire to keep the ball.”

Smith plans to major in elementary education.

Morgan White

White, a 5-2 midfielder, earned four letters in high school at Mill Creek and two letters at Young Harris College. She was a two-year starter for Young Harris and was a part of the 2006 national title team.

“With Morgan we have found the experienced player I was looking for to complement my amazing young team. By being a central figure in her Junior College team’s progress to winning the NJCAA national championship in 2006 she knows what it takes to go to the next level,” Shaw said. “Her big game experience will be vital to us reaching our goals.”

White plans to major in education.

Kelsey Meyer

Meyer, a 5-2 midfielder, was a four year letterwinner in soccer for Columbine High School. She also earned four letters in cross country. Meyer helped the Rebels to the 5A Colorado state quarterfinals in 2006. She earned second team all-conference honors in 2007.

 “Kelsey despite her size does not lose many 50/50 balls. Her versatility where she can play any where across the midfield or up front makes her an important addition. She was a player who my current team members were begging for me to sign,” Shaw said. “I am glad she is a Lady Brave as her attacking threat is a welcome addition as she can play quality inch perfect balls with her left and right foot using the inside or outside of her feet.”

Meyer plans to major in exercise science.

Kasey Craven

Craven, a 5-6 midfielder, was a four-year letter winner in high school at North Cobb High and a two-year letter winner at Young Harris College. She was a teammate of White’s on the title team. Craven also helped her club team to the state tournament.

Craven plans to major in psychology.

Jessica Wyckoff

Wyckoff, a 5-3 forward, earned four letters in soccer for Palmer High School. She helped the Moose to the Alaska state soccer tournament in 2006 and 2007, placing sixth place both years.

Wyckoff also helped her high school team to a second place finish at regional both in 2006 and 2007. She was a all-conference selection this past season.

 “Jessica is a player that can come in a give us a valuable option in a much need areas. When she plays with confidence she has the ability to beat players with skill not just speed,” Shaw said. “Her attributes are going to help us immensely either up front or outside midfield and I am glad she has joined our program.”

Amanda Just

Just, a 5-2 midfielder, earned four letters in soccer, two in basketball and two in cross country for Andover High School. She helped lead her club team to three straight state tourney appearances, playing in the championship game all three times. She helped her high school team to a fourth-place finish in 2005 and a third-place finish in 2006 in 5A.

She is a three-time all-league and all-region selection for the Trojans. Just also earned second team all-stats honors and was awarded her teams MVP award. For her career, Just has scored 50 goals and dished out 48 assists.

“Amanda, a teammate of Lauren Peil’s successful club team RCSC Lady Tigers has the pedigree, experience and quality coaching that will make her an instant success. Despite her quite demeanor off the field she is a monster on it with her speed, work rate and attacking ability she will terrorize teams as a freshman,” Shaw said. “She is one of the best ball playing midfielders in Kansas and it’s been a while since I have seen someone with such an amazing awareness to be able to find that penetrating pass.”

Just plans to major in biology.
