| By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer It’ll be hip to be square Saturday. For the 37th year, the Garnett Square Fair will return to the grounds of the Anderson County Courthouse, between Fourth and Fifth streets to the north and south, and Oak and Main streets to the west and east. “It’s been one of those good running events,” Susan Wettstein, City of Garnett administrative assistant, said. With arts and crafts as the primary draw, the Square Fair has long been a popular stop for Mother’s Day gifts, Wettstein said. The Square Fair, which will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, also will include “hands on” children’s crafts, pottery, fine paintings, farmers market items and food vendors. Musical entertainment at the gazebo on the courthouse lawn will include Holy Cow from 10 a.m. to noon, Chuck Cowan from noon to 2 p.m., The Merrymakers from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and The Nightingales from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. In conjunction with the Square Fair is the Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild of Garnett’s annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Garnett Fire Station, 132 W. Fourth Ave. “I think quilting has become the most popular type of sewing,” Lou Ann Shmidl, who has been a member of the quilt guild for 11 years, said. “You don’t have to worry about it fitting,” Shmidl said about the advantage of quilting. The show usually attracts about 300 visitors. A queen-size quilt, Patches, will be given away in a drawing of a lucky ticket at 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the show. The quilt was made by Nancy Kreibach, show chairman, and Mary Luney, of Leroy, Glenda Freeman, of Yates Center, and Phyllis Gordon, Pat Winfrey and Lynda Feuerborn, all of Garnett. Bud Freeman, of Yates Center, did the machine quilting. Proceeds from the quilt will go toward a $500 scholarship from the guild to a student entering college or trade school from an Anderson County high school, Shmidl said. The quilt show also will feature quilts and other items made by guild members with a vote by guests to determine “people’s choice.” | |
