Kirkpatrick receives volunteer award

Six members of General Edward Hand Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, attended the 110th annual State Conference of the Kansas Society May 2-4 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, Topeka.

Chapter regent Elaine Oakleaf, Effingham, and members, Emily Kirkpatrick, Dee Ellen Kruzel, Cara Polsley and Barbara Dew, all of Ottawa, and Clarice Knight, Princeton, joined about 200 other Kansas DAR members in attendance. Polsley served as a conference page and Kirpatrick was conference pianist.

State officers and chairmen reported on the work of the society and presented state awards. Oakleaf is KSDAR Constitution Week State Chairman.

Kirkpatrick received the society’s top award for outstanding service to veterans. Other awards to the chapter included those for support of a Junior Member in military service in Iraq, support of the DAR schools, literacy promotion, commemorative events programs, conservation and Constitution Week projects, and donation of library books and library displays.

Plans were finalized for state regent Shirley Coupal’s three-year project of restoring the 89 granite Santa Fe Trail markers that the society placed across the state 1906-1914. The luncheon speaker May 3 was Santa Fe Trail expert David Clapsaddle, Larned, who spoke about the trail and displayed artifacts and historic drawings of it.
