| By CLEON RICKEL, Herald Senior Writer Bill Feuerborn has filed for re-election to the 5th District of the Kansas House of Representatives. Feuerborn, a Democrat from Garnett, represents Ottawa south of the Marais des Cygnes River, southeast Franklin County, southwest Miami County and northeast Anderson County. So far, Feuerborn has one challenger, Cynthia “Cara” Polsley, Ottawa Republican. Except for independents, candidates have until noon June 10 to file for local and state offices. In filing, Feuerborn said he played an important role in drafting laws to help communities affected by the flooding in 2007. The law, approved this session, will provide sales tax exemptions for material purchased for the repair or reconstruction of businesses damaged by flooding. Incentives for affordable housing development in impacted communities were also included. “Bipartisan flood relief proposals adopted this session will help communities still struggling with the effects of last summer’s flooding,” Feuerborn said. “More importantly, the legislation will provide long-term economic benefits by encouraging business investment in our part of the state and increasing affordable housing.” Feuerborn is the ranking leader on the House Appropriations Committee, Feuerborn said he helped to ensure that funding was provided for important in-home services for seniors and the disabled as well as early childhood education services. He also serves on House Committees on Education Budget and Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Joint Committee on State Building Construction and the Joint Committee on Health Policy Oversight. | |
