Ottawa softball signs ACCC transfer

Allen County Community College transfer Sam Skinner has signed to play softball for Ottawa University. The junior is from Lone Jack, Mo.

Skinner, a 5-foot-9 outfielder, earned two letters for ACCC. She earned honorable mention all-conference as a freshman and second team this past spring.

Skinner attended Archbishop O’Hara High School and earned three letters in softball for the Celtics. She earned first team all-conference and all-district twice in high school. Skinner helped her traveling team to a third-place finish at 18U Nationals and to a state championship in 16U. She also helped them to a fifth place finish at ASA 18U Nationals held in Owensboro, Ky.

“Sam is coming off of a great season for Allen County. At ACCC, she played centerfield and hit leadoff, she will have a chance to fill both of those rolls for us next year,” Ottawa coach Jay Kahnt said. “We are excited to have Sam joining our program for the next two years.”

Skinner plans to major in education.

Cowboys, Owens agree to extension

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Terrell Owens has been on his best behavior for quite awhile. The Dallas Cowboys are doing their best to keep it that way.

Both sides agreed Monday to a three-year contract extension worth around $27 million, according to a person close to the negotiations.

The key to the deal may not be the length or even the money, which is close to what Randy Moss received.

The best part: Owens will not be playing out the final year of his contract, eliminating a potentially explosive topic from a team that needs its attention on ending an 11-season drought without a playoff win.

Word of Owens’ deal came a few hours after the Cowboys got other good news: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is allowing suspended cornerback Adam ‘‘Pacman’’ Jones to join the club all the way up to the regular season and will decide by Sept. 1 if Jones can be fully reinstated.

Boston’s Ortiz put on DL

BALTIMORE (AP) — Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn tendon in his left wrist, manager Terry Francona said Monday night.

Ortiz hurt his wrist while swinging at a pitch Saturday night in a game against the Baltimore Orioles. He missed Sunday’s game, then left the team for Boston, where he underwent an MRI on Monday.
