| By The Herald Staff Television broadcasters pull the plug today on analog signals and convert their stations to all-digital signals.
Kansas City area stations agreed to switch at 9 a.m. today.
If you receive your TV from cable or satellite, you may not notice the difference.
If you receive your signal over the air, today is the day you'll need to be sure you've installed a converter box to receive the digital signals.
Here are some tips:
- If you still need a converter box, you still can get a government coupon to get $40 off the purchase price. They are being offered through July 31. Go to www.dtv2009.gov on the Web or call (888)-DTV-2009 — that's (888)-388-2009.
- Throw away the rabbit ears. The standard old airwave antenna that looks like a V was designed to capture VHF signals, but the new digital signals from Kansas City-area stations are all in the higher UHF sprectrum, which is for channels 14 and higher. That means you need to make sure you're using a loop or bow-tie antenna.
- Don't forget, portable, hand-held, battery-powered TVs often used by campers or for emergency use, also will need a converter box. To use one in a power-outage situation you would need a battery-powered converter box, too.
- Want more information? Go to www.dtv.gov on the Web and type in your ZIP code or call (888)-CALL-FCC — in numbers that's (888) 325-5322.
