City of Garnett collects cards for commissioner

The city of Garnett will accept donations and get-well cards for Garnett City Commissioner Mike Norman, who was paralyzed by a kart racing accident June 7.

The city has heard from so many people who want to help Norman that city hall will begin accepting donations and cards during regular business hours, at  after-hours drop boxes, or by mail to Garnett City Hall, 131 W. 5th Avenue, P.O. Box H, Garnett, KS, 66032, City Manager Joyce Martin said.

“We welcome these acts of kindness and we want to promote a positive message of hope to Mike and his family during this challenging time,” Martin said.

Norman is paralyzed from the waist down and will undergo extensive rehabilitation, she said. The future prognosis and full extent of his injuries is unknown.

Martin said she spoke by telephone with his wife, Helen Norman, who expressed overwhelming gratitude to everyone for the outpouring of prayers and support. 

Norman has served as a city commissioner for 17 years. He was also an active volunteer and member of community groups including Holy Angels Catholic Church, the Garnett Volunteer Fire Department, the Shrine, Sons of the American Legion, Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce, Anderson County Corn Festival Committee and as a Kansas Jaycees Senator.
