General Edward Hand Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution met at 1:30 p.m. June 13 at the Ottawa City Hall meeting room. Regent Elaine Oakleaf and Kristie Wyman served as hostesses. Eighteen were in attendence including 12 members, three guests from the Marais des Cygnes Chapter in Paola, a guest, Myla Hogan, and two program presenters. Oakleaf opened the meeting. Edith Rader gave an inspirational reading about the flag and what it means to each of us. Regent Oakleaf continued with the Ritual, flag salute and the American’s Creed. Emily Kirkpatrick, vice regent, introduced the speaker, Anna Smith. The title of her presentation was “One Who Was There — Deborah Samson.” Samson was the first known American woman to impersonate a man in order to join the Army in combat during the American Revolution. It was a very emotional and interesting program. Bettie Ore, national defense chairperson, told about the huge numbers of adults who have taken a civics test and have had very low scores on same. Barbara Netherland, recording secretary, read the minutes of the April meeting that were approved as read. The regent read a thank you letter from the Junior General Store in thanks for the chapter’s contribution. Netherland gave the following treasurer’s report in the absence of the treasurer, which was approved as read. The report said the beginning balance as of April was $469.71. No income was made in April. Expenditures included $25 to Franklin County Historical Society for a donation and $60 to Balch Brothers for a marker, which left a balance of $384.71. The chapter’s CD was at $1,563.67. No activity was recorded in May. Oakleaf, who is president of the Regent’s Club, reported on the state convention. She shared many pictures and told of the many awards the chapter received at the convention. General Edward Hand received an honorable mention over all. There was installation of officers. Netherland was presented a 25-year membership certificate. Pat McFarland invited all to her 80th birthday celebration scheduled for June 20. Harma McKenzie announced she was having an 85th birthday celebration. Ore announced she will take paperbacks to the Veterans Hospital after the next meeting. The meeting was adjourned.
