Race Across America

Jure Robic, Slovenia, stopped for about 10 minutes at Fort Scott for a cup of hot chocolate, a wheel change and to pose with Rachel Giacin, 11, Ottawa, en route to Annapolis, Md., to win the Race Across America transcontinental bicycle race June 17. Robic’s official time was 8 days, 23 hours, 33 minutes. It was the fourth time he has won the race in the past five years. The race began at Oceanside, Calif. Giacin and her father spent 36 hours camped out cheering on favorites as they passed, seeing old friends and making new ones from the United States, Austria, England, Switzerland and Brazil.
