Glenn Layton, age 77, of Wellsville, Kan., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 20, 2008. Glenn died as a result of burns sustained in an accident on June 5, 2008. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wilson’s Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 24, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wellsville Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Wellsville Cemetery.

He was born to Glenn F. and Edythe J. (Huffman) Layton in Barnsdall, Okla., on March 21, 1931.

The family moved to the Wellsville area in April 1932. He attended Garfield grade school, a one room school in the country, and the Wellsville High School, graduating in 1949. He attended Baker University and Independence Junior College where Glenn and his brother, Bob, both played on the football team.

Glenn and Carolyn May Nichols started dating their senior year in high school, marrying on July 9, 1950. They were together for 58 years before Glenn’s death and they grew closer and closer as husband and wife through each year.

They created a beautiful life together centered on faith in God and family.   Glenn spent his early years working in the oil fields. He accepted the Lord on Easter Sunday morning in 1953 and was baptized in the Wellsville Baptist Church. Glenn was licensed to the gospel ministry by the Wellsville Baptist Church on Dec. 6, 1970. He served as pastor of the Green Valley Baptist Church and Victory Baptist Church in Osawatomie, Kan., from 1970 to 1987. He also served as interim pastor in Moran, Kan. He enjoyed filling the pulpit in many churches when the opportunity presented itself.

He received his real estate license in 1990 and joined his father at Layton Real Estate on Main Street in Wellsville. In 2005 he was chosen as Business Person Of The Year by the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce. Glenn had a deep loyalty to the community of Wellsville and worked diligently for it’s improvement. He felt strongly in supporting the people of local businesses. His presence on Main Street and generous support for Wellsville sports will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Nichols Layton (Grandma Layton); a daughter, Annette Bowman; his brothers-in-law, Riley Nichols and Don Dumler; and sisters-in-law, Kay Russell and Julia Hope Nichols.
