Mildred Marie Velvick, 91, Garnett, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, Garnett.

She was born Oct. 6, 1916, at Shubert, Neb., to Clyde Arthur and Lela Leona (Lord) Filmer.

She graduated from Peru High School, Peru, Neb. She then graduated from Peru State College in 1937. She also received her master’s degree from Emporia State University.

She taught junior high history and social studies at Garnett.    

She married Elmon M. Velvick Feb. 15, 1941, at Auburn, Neb. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Jay Velvick, Garnett; daughters, Sherrie Brown, Garnett, and Jacalin Hiles, Richmond; a brother, Rex Filmer, Gretna, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Brown; an infant sister, Elaine Filmer; and a brother, Wayne Filmer.

Burial will be at the Garnett Cemetery.

Family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett.
