A children’s choir from Africa will spend the day in Ottawa Tuesday.

As part of its United States tour, Hope for Africa Children’s Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 203 E. Fourth St., Ottawa.

The choir will arrive at Camp Chippewa for lunch and spend the afternoon and then come to the church for supper before the concert, Carolyn Elder, First United Methodist Church lay leader, said.

The children’s choir was founded in 1984 by the United Methodist East Africa Annual Conference, and its members come from across Africa.

Many of the children came from internal refugee camps, the result of a civil war that has raged in Uganda for 20 years, according to www.hopeforafricachildrenschoir.org

The children in the choir now live at the Humble United Methodist School in Mukono, Uganda. Through the U.S. tour, they hope to raise awareness and funds to provide education, food, medical care, and room and board for other children.

The choir will spend the night in Ottawa at the home of members of the First United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church. The church members will then take the choir to Pittsburg Wednesday for its next concert, Elder said.
