Brent Macklin told his son “what the heck, you might as well go for it, you have just as good of shot as anyone else.”

So Logan Macklin, a sophomore at West Franklin High School, wrote an essay, with the hopes of getting a free ride to the Christian Youth Roping School.

The school teaches its students about the rodeo event of team roping. It is in Hamilton, Texas, and lasts for three days. The cost is about $700-800 per person.

Logan said he really wasn’t a fan of writing and didn’t have a lot of experience with writing essays, but that he hoped he would get accepted to the school. He wrote his essay about how the school would help him and what he would get out of it.

“I’m extremely proud of him, and I think he should be recognized for all his hard work,” Brent Macklin said. “It showed a lot of initiative to write the essay and do it good enough to get the scholarship to the school.”

Logan said the biggest influence on him getting into team roping was his dad.

“He’s pretty much the reason for me doing it,” he said.

The school is taught by Tee Woolman and Clay O’Brien Cooper. In 2004, Woolman was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. He also has racked up three world titles over the years. Cooper has won seven world titles.

Logan said he is looking forward to getting better at the school and learning a lot.

He’s also excited about meeting Woolman and Cooper.

Logan has been doing rodeo for a little more than a year. So far, he is just participating in team roping but is thinking about starting calf roping. Logan said he likes the rodeo experience, especially being competitive and getting to meet people.

In addition to attending high school, Logan will be participating in rodeos across the state this fall.
