Central Heights rolls to home tourney title

Area high school volleyball teams fared well Saturday in volleyball tournaments.

Central Heights and Anderson County won home tournaments, while Wellsville and West Franklin were second in their tournaments.

The Vikings went 5-0 to win the CH Invitational. This was the second straight tourney title as the Vikings won the De Soto Invitational a week ago.

Central Heights defeated Erie (25-8, 25-9), Crest (25-7, 25-0), Metro Academy (25-15, 25-13), Osawatomie (25-10, 25-16) and Girard (25-10, 25-23).

Central Heights (32-4) closes the regular season today at Osawatomie.

Wellsville

GARNETT — Wellsville played a lot of big points in its five matches all went three games.

The Eagles went 4-1, falling to Anderson County in the championship match, to finish second.

“It was a long, physical day for our team as every match we played went three sets,” Wellsville coach Eric Evans said. “I thought our defense was at a high level all day ... the girls had the attitude that no ball was going to touch the floor on our side. Also, I thought we stayed aggressive throughout the day in all aspects of our game.

In the finals, the Eagles fell to the Bulldogs, 21-25, 25-19, 25-9. In the semifinals, Wellsville downed Labette County, 25-13, 25-27, 25-19.

Wellsville won its pool. The Eagles defeated Fort Scott (25-13, 18-25, 25-18), Prairie View (21-25, 25-11, 25-13) and Independence (25-17, 21-25, 25-21).

“All in all, it was a good showing for our team on Saturday and hopefully has us going in the right direction as our last league matches come up, along with sub-state,” Evans said.

Wellsville (13-20, 4-4) plays 4:30 today at home in a double-dual with Prairie View. On Saturday, Wellsville will plays its 3A sub-state at home.

West Franklin

ESKRIDGE — Osage City and West Franklin are familiar with each other. The two teams tied for the regular season Flint Hills League title.

They met again Saturday to decide the league postseason championship. It was another tight one with Osage City winning, 11-25, 25-16, 25-21.

“It was a really good match,” Falcon coach Angie Corwine said.

West Franklin won its pool with wins over Herington (25-14, 25-19), Mission Valley (25-18, 25-20) and Council Grove (25-18, 23-25, 25-16). In the semifinals, the Falcons defeated Chase County (25-20, 25-12).

The Falcons served 90 percent with 52 aces in the tourney.

“We served lights out,” Corwine said.

West Franklin (23-7) plays tonight at home against Metro Academy.
